WE HELP KEEP THE CITY CLEAN TOGETHER. I THINK CITY OF DENTON IS A MUCH CLEANER PLACE. SECOND OF ALL, MY STAFF FIRST, AND YOU KNOW THE FRONTLINE FOLKS THAT ARE DAY IN AND DAY OUT, GOING TO EVERY BUSINESS, EVERY HOUSEHOLD, SERVING THE CITIZENS, THEY COME IN, THEY HAVE A PASSION FOR WHAT THEY DO. SO OCTOBER 2023 TO NOVEMBER OR EXCUSE ME, SEPTEMBER 2024, PROVIDE AN UPDATE ON A FEW OF OUR HIGHER PROFILE PROJECTS THAT WE'RE DOING, AND THEN ALSO LAY THE GROUNDWORK FOR SOME IMPROVEMENTS WE'RE CONTEMPLATING FOR THE SYSTEM OVER THE NEXT 2 OR 3 YEARS. SO WITH THAT, WE'LL GET STARTED. AND THERE WE GO. SO IN FY 2324, FROM OUR RESIDENTS IN THE CITY OF DENTON, WE COLLECTED OVER 35,000 TONS OF WASTE CURBSIDE. THAT'S THE WEIGHT OF ABOUT TWO BROOKLYN BRIDGES. THAT IS A LOT OF MATERIAL. YOU THINK CITY IS A SMALL TOWN, BUT WHEN YOU LOOK AT THOSE NUMBERS, IT'S LIKE THAT IS A LOT OF LOT OF MATERIAL. SIMILARLY, FROM A RECYCLING STANDPOINT, WE COLLECTED OVER ALMOST 5200 TONS OF MATERIAL THAT WAS ACTUALLY DIVERTED AND USED AND TURNED INTO BRAND NEW BOTTLES, PAPER, THINGS OF THAT NATURE. SO AGAIN, ABOUT 23 STATUE OF LIBERTY'S WORTH OF MATERIAL FROM A YARD WASTE STANDPOINT, CLOSE TO 88 OVER OVER 8800 TONS OF MATERIAL. SO ABOUT THE WEIGHT OF AN EIFFEL TOWER OF BRUSH, LIMBS, LEAVES, GRASS CLIPPINGS AND ALL THAT MATERIAL WE SEND OVER TO OUR PARTNERS OVER AT WASTEWATER AND THE BENEFICIAL REUSE, THEY TURN INTO THE DINO DIRT. AND AGAIN, SO IT'S THAT THAT FULL CYCLE OF TAKING WASTE, TURNING IT INTO INTO TREASURES AND MAKING IT HAPPEN. AND AT THAT TIME WHEN WE FIRST INITIATED OUR OUR COMPREHENSIVE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY, CITY OF DENTON RESIDENTS WAS ABOUT 6 POUNDS. SO AGAIN, ABOUT A POUND MORE. AND WE'RE

SCRATCHING OUR HEAD AND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT, YOU KNOW, GET OUR GOAL WAS TO GET UNDER THAT NUMBER. WELL, I'M PROUD TO REPORT THAT IN THIS PAST YEAR WE'VE ACTUALLY HIT 4.4 POUNDS.SO A HALF POUND LESS THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE. SO, YOU KNOW, NOT TO SAY, YOU KNOW, NOT ONLY ARE WE USING LESS, BUT WE'RE DIVERTING SIGNIFICANTLY MORE MATERIAL FROM OUR LANDFILL. WHY IS THIS? WELL, PEOPLE MAY BE BUYING LESS DUE TO THE ECONOMY. BUT ALSO YOU LOOK AT PACKAGING REDESIGN, MORE EFFICIENT USE OF WHAT WE HAVE AND THEN AGAIN, RECYCLING, DIVERTING CORRECTLY.
WE HAVE THAT MATERIAL. WE MAKE THOSE THOSE THOSE GOALS HAPPEN. OUR HOME CHEMICAL COLLECTION COLLECTION, WE HAD 163 TONS OF MATERIALS COLLECTED AND EITHER RECYCLED OR BENEFICIALLY REUSED OR ENVIRONMENTALLY DISPOSED OF IN THE PROPER MANNER ABOUT THE WEIGHT OF A BLUE WHALE. SO AGAIN, COMMERCIAL WASTE. AGAIN. WE ARE THE EXCLUSIVE PROVIDER OF BOTH RESIDENTIAL COMMERCIAL WASTE SERVICES IN THE CITY OF DENTON. SO FROM OUR BUSINESSES, APARTMENTS, THINGS OF THAT NATURE, I COLLECTED OVER A LITTLE OVER A LITTLE OVER 101,000 TONS OF MATERIAL ABOUT THE WEIGHT OF A NIMITZ CLASS AIRCRAFT CARRIER. AGAIN, SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF MATERIAL THAT WE'VE TAKEN FROM THE CURB FROM OUR BUSINESS COMMUNITY. SIMILARLY, COMMERCIAL DIVERSION, THEY HAVE STEPPED UP ABOUT 16,000, ALMOST 16,000 AND A HALF TONS OF MATERIAL, OR NINE EYES OF LONDON FERRIS WHEELS IN LONDON. WHEN WE LOOK AT THE TOTAL CITY OF DENTON DIVERSION THAT WE'VE HAD OVER THIS PAST YEAR, WE'VE ACTUALLY HIT 26%. YOU MAY REMEMBER THREE YEARS AGO WHEN WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE COMPREHENSIVE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY I THREW OUT.
OUR GOAL IS 30% DIVERSION BY 2030, 40% BY 2040, 75% BY 2075. WE'RE WELL AHEAD OF WHERE OF WHAT OUR GOAL IS RIGHT NOW. AND WE ANTICIPATE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS WE'LL MEET THAT 30% AND THEN BE WELL ON OUR WAY TO THE 40% BY 2040. WHAT HAS THIS DONE TO OUR LANDFILL? WE KEEP TALKING ABOUT THE LANDFILL, THE JEWEL THAT WE HAVE, THAT THAT REALLY KEYSTONE THAT THAT MAKES A LOT OF THINGS HAPPEN HERE. CURRENTLY OUR PERMITTED CAPACITY, WE'VE USED ABOUT 28% OF THAT MATERIAL OF THAT AIRSPACE. AT THE CURRENT DISPOSAL LEVEL, WE'VE GOT CLOSE TO 80 YEARS OF CAPACITY LEFT IN THE FACILITY. IF YOU COUNT IN, YOU KNOW, IN THE GROWTH THAT'S HAPPENING IN THIS AREA. WE'RE STILL NORTH OF 50 YEARS. SO AGAIN, A SIGNIFICANT.
SIGNIFICANT POSITIVE EFFECT ON WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING HERE AS A RESULT OF OUR DIVERSION EFFORTS.
AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO ADDITIONAL THINGS THAT WE'LL BE DOING HERE IN THE NEAR FUTURE TO HELP MAKE THAT THAT LAST EVERY EVEN LONGER. SO WE CAN CAN SQUEEZE EVERY YEAR OUT OF THE USE OF THAT FACILITY THAT WE POSSIBLY HAVE. TALKING A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SOME OF OUR HIGHER PROFILE PROGRAMS, COMMERCIAL DIVERSION. ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO, WE PASSED A COMMERCIAL DIVERSION PLAN ORDINANCE AND INCLUDED IN THE ORDINANCE WE HAVE 21, A LITTLE OVER 2100 COMMERCIAL CUSTOMERS AS OF JANUARY 31ST. WE HAD APPROVED 1120 PLANS WITH 70 PLANS PENDING THROUGH THROUGH THE END OF FEBRUARY. WE HAD ALMOST 300 MORE PEOPLE FILE PLANS GET IN CONTACT WITH US.
CURRENTLY WE HAVE ABOUT 600 OUTSTANDING COMMERCIAL CUSTOMERS THAT HAVE NOT EITHER CONTACTED US OR FILED PLANS. SO WHAT WE ARE DOING THROUGH MARCH AND EARLY APRIL IS ACTUALLY VERY INTENSIVELY GOING OUT. AND FIRST OF ALL, CHECKING OUR LIST. ARE THESE FOLKS STILL CUSTOMERS? WE'LL MAKE SURE THAT THAT WE'RE ACTUALLY TRYING TO CONTACT A VIABLE ENTITY. BUT SECONDLY, WE WANT TO MAKE THAT DIRECT CONTACT. SO AGAIN, GO BACK OUT, IDENTIFY THE FOLKS THAT THAT ARE OUT THERE. JUST THROUGH THAT DIVERSION, YOU DOUBLE THAT. YOU KNOW, WE'VE BEEN IN THIS YEAR FOR ABOUT SIX MONTHS, SO WE DOUBLE THAT TO ACCOUNT FOR A FULL YEAR, 14 DAYS, 14 DAYS DOESN'T SOUND LIKE A LOT, BUT 14 DAYS OVER 50

ANOTHER BIG PROGRAM THAT WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON IS OUR CART AUDITING PROGRAM. AS YOU KNOW, WE HAVE PERSON PERSONNEL ON SITE THAT GO TO RESIDENTIAL HOMES, LIFT THE LID, EVALUATE THE RECYCLING THAT'S CURBSIDE, AND IF YOU'RE DOING IT GREAT, YOU GET A RECYCLING ALL-STAR STICKER. IF YOU'RE LESS THAN 15%, YOU KNOW, YOU GET AN OOPS TAG, SOMETHING THAT THAT MAYBE SHOULDN'T HAVE GONE IN THERE. BUT WE GET THAT CLEANED UP. AND IF IT'S MORE THAN 15%, THEN WE CLEAN YOUR CART, WE WORK WITH YOU, BUT WE GIVE YOU A NOTICE TAG SAYING THINGS NEED TO IMPROVE. YOU'LL NOTICE THAT, YOU KNOW, WE GENERATE THESE HEAT MAPS AND HAVE BEEN DOING IT FOR A WHILE. DECEMBER 2023. SO JUST IN THOSE FOUR YEARS AND FIVE YEARS, JUST TALKING WITH CUSTOMERS, MAKING THAT CHANGE, GOING OUT AND, YOU KNOW, DOING THAT, THAT INTIMATE EDUCATION HAS REALLY MADE A DIFFERENCE. WE THOUGHT, WELL, 14%. WE'RE WAITING FOR THAT OTHER SHOE TO DROP. WE'RE WAITING FOR THE NUMBER TO SKYROCKET. FEBRUARY OF 2025, WE HAD 8% CONTAMINATION. WE GAVE CARTS TO 144 TOTAL CUSTOMERS IN THE DOWNTOWN FRYE STREET AREA. THIS IS A VERY LIMITED PROJECT. WE'LL NEVER GET ANY LARGER. SO WHAT WE'RE DOING IS BACK DOOR SERVICE OF BOTH OF ACTUALLY THREE WASTE STREAMS. WE'RE DOING, YOU KNOW, GARBAGE, RECYCLING AND ORGANICS. CURRENTLY, WE COLLECT A LITTLE MORE THAN A TON A WEEK OF ORGANICS MATERIAL FROM THE DOWNTOWN VALET AREA. THIS WEEK, WE KICKED OFF A PILOT IN A SCHOOL, A PRIVATE SCHOOL IN DENTON, TO START TAKING THAT NEXT STEP FOR COMMERCIAL ORGANICS DIVERSION. SO WE'LL BE BRINGING BACK RESULTS OF THAT AS WE START TO IMPLEMENT THAT. THIS THIRD PARTY COMPANY WOULD COME IN AND ESTABLISH A FACILITY. THEY WOULD ACTUALLY SPLIT THE GAS, REFINE IT DOWN TO WHAT, 99.98% METHANE REMOVED AND THE OTHER MAKEUP GASES, YOU KNOW, WOULD BE WE'D BE TREATED AND RELEASED. BUT THAT THAT FRACTION OF, OF RENEWABLE NATURAL GAS WOULD BE SOLD BACK TO ATMOS, TO THE PIPELINE THAT'S ADJACENT TO THE LANDFILL. AND THEN WHAT WE WOULD DO IS IT WOULD BE USED IN HOMES THAT HAVE NATURAL GAS RIGHT NOW.
